Memphis, TN

Central BBQ
2249 Central Ave.
Memphis,TN 38104

When I drove through Memphis around noon on my road trip back to Chicago, I couldn't resist the urge to sample some of the world-famous BBQ for which this town is known.  I asked a local for a quick recommendation, and he immediately sent us to Central BBQ, urging us to try their "BBQ Nachos" (a concept that seems counter-intuitive if you ask me, but what the hell, I'll try anything once).

As soon as you walk through the door, you get the idea that Central BBQ doesn't try to be anything other than what it is.  You read the menu from the wall behind the counter, and you place your order fast-food style.  Mike and I decided to split the infamous BBQ Nachos, and I opted out of the more expensive ribs for the standard brisket sandwich.

The brisket sandwich was a healthy-size portion (not "healthy-healthy", but "heart-attack healthy"), and the Nacho's could have fed a family of five. There weren't a lot of bells and whistles at Central BBQ.  My sandwich came with a bun, sliced beef brisket, a generous lather of BBQ sauce, and coleslaw.  The nachos were covered in shredded cheese, pulled pork, jalapenos, and of course, more BBQ sauce. That simplicity really sold me; the flavors were well paired, but not overwhelming.

Overall, I loved the meal because it wasn't overly elaborate.  I got exactly what I ordered, and they delivered with some damn-good food.  It wasn't enough to send me into a full-blown foodgasm, but I'd recommend this place to anyone passing through town.

Denver, CO

Bull & Bush Pub and Brewery
4700 Cherry Creek South Drive
Denver, CO 80246

Manly men eat man-food (and man-beer), and you'll find plenty at this old-school pub. The burgers are great, the happy-hour boasts half price appetizers that will fill you up at a steep discount, and their beer is brewed on-site and sold in growlers. The Man Beer (a really boozy IPA) is a regular favorite, but the Big Ben Brown Ale just might be my favorite beer in the country.

If you're looking to get the full experience, you're going to need to set aside at least 2 hours at The Bull. I've yet to find a better brunch spot in Denver, and their double-bloody's will help absolve you of your sins from the night before and provide absolution to keep the party going. "The Cure" is their hangover special, and you'll find more than enough hash browns, eggs, gravy, and green chili to put you into a food coma for the rest of the weekend.

Dinner's great too. The Queen Mother Burger and Horseradish Bacon Burger are always solid choices. Their nightly specials are fantastic, with all-you-can eat fish 'n' chips on Fridays. Tuesday nights will get you a man-sized prime rib and a growler of beer for about 25 bucks. Deals like this make the Bull & Bush my favorite spot in Denver.
